Job-Sharing in General Practice—A Thing of Beauty

The imposition of the new General Practice contract, with all the acrimony it has engendered, has obscured another change in General Practice, which has far-reaching potential. This is the explosive rise in job-sharing seen recently, exemplified by the figures for Devon FHSA, which has seen a rise from 4 jobsharing GPs, in two years, to 28 by June, 1991 (personal communication, Devon FHSA). In this article, I propose to review the mechanics of jobsharing, the financial implications, the reasons for (and against!), and to attempt a prediction of the future.
